How to File Your Weekly Unemployment Claim

Once you have applied for unemployment benefits, you must request benefits every week that you are unemployed or working reduced hours. This process is known as “certifying” your eligibility.

Key Actions

When to File

The “benefit week” runs from Sunday to Saturday. You can file for the previous week starting Sunday at 6:00 a.m. * Deadline: You should file as soon as the week ends. If you wait more than 21 days, your claim may be closed.

  • Waiting Week: Massachusetts law requires a “waiting week.” You must file for your first week of eligibility, but you will not receive payment for it.
Requirements for Weekly Filing

Every time you file, you must confirm three things to remain eligible:

  • 1. Work Search: You must complete at least 3 work search activities per week (e.g., submitting an application, attending a job fair, or interviewing).
  • 2. Ability to Work: You must be physically and mentally capable of working.
  • 3. Availability: You must be available to accept a “suitable” job offer immediately.
